Our very own Dr. Alex Tievsky has been invited to speak at the FIP World Congress of Podiatry in Montreal, Canada May 26-28, 2016. This event is held every three years and attracts participants from all around the world.
Dr. Tievsky will be presenting on the topic of “Weight Bearing 3D – CT Imaging for the Private Practice,” which gives podiatrists the ability to view a loaded foot in 3 dimensions to help plan foot surgery.
What’s a Loaded Foot?
A loaded foot refers to the volume of weight bearing down on the foot during an activity. For example, running or walking on a treadmill is a loaded activity, while riding the upright exercise bike is an unloaded activity.
Up until recently, the field of podiatry has been using weight bearing x-rays to obtain more detail while the foot is being loaded. Any patient who has a foot or ankle disorder invoking a bone – such as a bunion, hammertoe, or fracture – will benefit from a CT scan like this, however, the biggest problems with using CT machines to assist in identifying foot problems has been that the machines are non-weight bearing and emit a lot of radiation.
A weight bearing CT scan is the next step to viewing a loaded foot in three dimensions. This can detect exact bony orientation needed when planning foot surgery. Adler Footcare uses the pedCAT machine, which keeps radiation to around the same levels as three x-ray views.
Latest CT Imaging Technology
The CurveBeam pedCAT adds a new dimension to diagnosis of foot problems. It allows for CT imaging under true physiological weight bearing loads and quicker patient scans of one or both feet. Weight bearing 3-dimensional views of the foot and ankle give specialists the information they need for comprehensive treatment plans that lead to more successful foot surgeries.
