misguided-illustrationIt’s hard to find something you didn’t even know you should be looking for. If you have heel pain caused by plantar fasciitis, and you’re looking for over-the-counter shoe inserts or custom orthotics to help you out, you may be looking in all the wrong places. Before we talk about another treatment option, let’s understand the basics of your foot problem.

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar Fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain brought on when your plantar fascia – a flat band of tissue that connects your heel bone to your toes – becomes strained, weak, swollen, or inflamed. This all leads to your heel or the bottom of your foot hurting when you stand or walk, especially when you first stand on your feet after getting out of bed in the morning. Your plantar fascia can become even more irritated if:

  • Your feet roll inward too much when you walk (overpronation)
  • You have high arches or flat feet
  • You walk, stand or run for long periods of time
  • You’re overweight
  • You wear shoes that don’t offer adequate support

Plantar fasciitis creates a stabbing, burning kind of heel pain and pain along the bottom of your foot.

Will custom orthotics help?

Custom orthotics are shoe inserts that are made specifically for your unique foot structure to correct an abnormal or irregular walking pattern caused by the foot not bearing weight properly. This can lead to issues like plantar fasciitis. Over-the-counter shoe inserts and custom orthotics for plantar fasciitis have been used for years by podiatrists, but always as a pain management tool. They have never been a treatment option that can get rid of the foot and heel pain completely. This is why you may be misguided in the treatment of your heel pain. While there are reasons when custom orthotics may be a good option for you, there is another alternative treatment available called HyProCure®.

How does HyProCure® treatment work?

What you probably don’t know is that your plantar fasciitis is also caused by your ankle bone slipping forward and inward. This leads to the over-stretching of the plantar fascia ligament that is causing your heel pain; as well as pain in other parts of your body like your knees, hips, back and neck, all as a result of misaligned feet. The HyProCure® procedure uses a minimally invasive technique – meaning it’s done by making a very small incision – and inserts a titanium stent into the natural space between your ankle and heel bone instantly stabilizing the ankle bone. This decreases the strain on the plantar fasciia and realigns your feet. Unlike custom orthotics, HyProCure® is a permanent, internal fix.

It’s important to note that not everyone is a candidate for HyProCure® treatment, in which case, custom orthotics may be your best option for heel pain caused by plantar fasciitis. The only way to know for sure is to visit a podiatrist.

If you’re in the New York area, contact a podiatrist at Adler Footcare, recognized as a HyProCure® Center of Excellence. We believe feet shouldn’t hurt and neither should their treatment.
