When you purchase a good pair of shoes you want to make sure you are getting the most bang for your buck. If you have flat feet you’re willing to spend a pretty penny on shoes that also offer you the right support and protect you against foot pain. But shoes do eventually wear out, so when you’re investing in a pair you want to get as much wear and tear as you can out of them. Custom orthotics are often recommended to help pain caused by fallen arches, but will custom orthotics for flat feet actually prolong the life of your shoes too?
What are custom orthotics?
Custom orthotics, also called arch supports, are inserts that slip inside your shoe to help correct imbalances in your foot. They are made specifically for your unique foot structure to target the areas you need the extra support. They vary in size, construction, and design, but generally will fit into most types of shoes. They won’t however, prolong the life of your shoes. Instead, the primary purpose of custom orthotics for flat feet is to manage your pain and ease your discomfort by offering more support.
Should you be worried about your shoes?
Custom orthotics are made for your feet not for your shoes. Actually, there are some types of shoes that can’t even be worn with orthotics - such as some styles of sandals - and they also can’t be worn when you’re barefoot. What you should really be focused on is not prolonging the life of your shoes, but protecting the life of your feet. Custom orthotics for flat feet are simply a temporary solution that doesn’t correct the underlying problem.
What is the root problem?
The actual problem causing your feet to not bear weight properly is foot misalignment caused when the ankle bone slips off the heel bone, creating an excessive inward rotation of the ankle. Custom orthotics for flat feet can help absorb shock, stabilize the foot, take extra pressure off of sore spots, and add extra support and protection, but they can’t realign your feet.
HyProCure® is a minimally invasive procedure that places a titanium stent into the naturally occurring space between the ankle and heel bone, realigning and stabilizing the foot, as well as restoring the motion of the ankle and decreasing the strain put on the foot. It’s an outpatient procedure that will have you back in your own shoes in 3 to 5 days – so you can continue to get your money’s worth out of them!
If you currently use custom orthotics for flat feet they will help manage your pain, but not correct the underlying problem. Even if you’ve invested in a good pair of shoes that offer you adequate support, custom orthotics won’t prolong the life of your feet.
